SA recall Duminy, Parnell for 2nd Test

SA recall Duminy, Parnell for 2nd Test

Centurion: South Africa on Monday added batsman JP Duminy and left-arm fast bowler Wayne Parnell to their squad for the second Test against India starting in Durban on Sunday.
The pair were added to the 12-man squad which won the first Test at SuperSport Park by an innings and 25 runs on Monday. Duminy scored an unbeaten double century in a domestic four-day match at the weekend to make a claim for the number six spot held by Ashwell Prince, who did not bat at Centurion.
It would be a surprise, though, if the selectors changed a settled batting top six. Parnell, though, might have a chance of replacing fellow left-armer Lonwabo Tsotsobe who took only one wicket for 148 runs in the first Test.
Squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Ashwell Prince, Mark Boucher, Paul Harris, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Ryan McLaren, JP Duminy and Wayne Parnell.

1st Test: Ind lose by an innings and 25 runs

1st Test: Ind lose by an innings and 25 runs

Centurion: South Africa took a little less than six overs on the final day of the first cricket Test to wrap up the last two Indian wickets and clinch the high profile series opener with a resounding innings and 25 runs victory here on Monday.
But more than South Africa's convincing victory against the number one ranked side in the world to take a 1-0 lead, the match at the SuperSport Park here will go down in history books as the one which witnessed Sachin Tendulkar reach the coveted landmark of scoring 50 centuries in Test cricket.
After they finished the penultimate day staring down the barrel at 454 for the loss of eight wickets, India's hopes, more than Tendulkar's broad shoulders, rested on the weather gods.
While Tendulkar remained unbeaten on 111, there was no rain interruption on the fifth and final day as the South African pace duo of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel sealed the issue in their team's favour in no time.
Resuming at 454 for eight, India could manage just five runs to their overnight total, four of them coming off Tendulkar's blade.
S Sreesanth was the first casualty of the day, falling vitim to Morkel's accuracy. The India pacer nicked one to a delivery that had a hint of away movement and AB de Villiers made no mistake at third slip.
Last man Jaidev Unadkat lasted just 10 balls for his one run before offering a simple catch to Ashwell Prince at gully as Steyn brought the curtains down on India's stiff second-innings resistance.
After the collapse in their first innings, India rode on Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir's half centuries in their second essay.
But four quick wickets pushed the visitors on the brink again before Tendulkar and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni stage a recovery with a spirited 172-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
It was Tendulkar's historic ton and his association with skipper Dhoni that helped India delay the inevitable.
While the batsmen dished out a much better performance in the second innings, India's bowling lacked the bite in the absence of spearhed Zaheer Khan.
The two teams now move to Durban for the second Test starting December 26.
With Tendulkar content to give Sreesanth and Unadkat the strike after both teams woke up to clear skies on the final morning, it was just a matter of time before the hosts inflicted on India their fisrt innings defeat on South African soil.
Despite the presence of a Tendulkar at the crease, India were never in with a chance to save the match.
The visitors, however, owe it to the champion batsman who on Sunday became the first cricketer to score 50 Test centuries.
With India almost on the brink of defeat after losing the wikets of Dravid, Laxman, raina and nightwatchman Ishant Sharma at the start of fourth day, Tendulkar played a sublime chanceless innings and along with Dhoni, frustrated the South African attack for more than three hours while adding runs at a brisk pace.
Tendulkar and Dhoni, who joined forces when an innings defeat was staring on India at 277 for six just before lunch on the penultimate day, were at ease while dealing with South African bowlers.
Tendulkar reached the milestone with a single off Steyn, a perfectly placed drive that pierced through cover and extra cover midway into the final session.
But, the joy of the iconic batsman reaching the coveted landmark did not last long as just four overs later, Dhoni perished to a rising delivery from Steyn. The Indian captain was caught in an awkward position and fended it to Boucher, who took a neat catch, diving to his right.
Once the big partnership between Tendulkar and Dhoni was broken with the latter falling victim to Steyn, India lost Harbhajan Singh who could score just one run from two balls just before rain interruption.
Before that, Tendulkar and Dhoni denied the South Africans any success as India scored at a fairly health rate, a far cry form their display in the first innings.
Tendulkar, who came in at the fall of Sharma at 214 for three in the morning session of the fourth day, stood rock solid while Dhoni was the aggressive of the two.
Both Dhoni and Tendulkar gave Steyn and Morkel some special treatment during their stay at the wicket by hitting them for a flurry of fours. The duo seemed undettered even after the home side had taken the new ball.
While India batted much better in the second innings, the damage had been done on the first morning itself after the visitors were put in by Grame Smith on conditions condusive for seamers.
By the time South Africa started their innings, the pitch at SuperSport Park had eased out considerably with fast bowlers not posing too much of a problem as they had done on the first day.

Aus Harris 'surprised' knee holding out

Aus Harris 'surprised' knee holding out

Perth: Australian third Test hero Ryan Harris admitted he was "surprised" how well he was playing with a chronic knee injury that is degenerating with virtually every ball.
The stocky, unheralded right-arm paceman is a latecomer to Test cricket, but the 31-year-old is determined to make the most of every chance he gets at the top level.
And he certainly did so at the WACA Ground, claiming 6-47 in the second innings to power Australia to a 267-run victory that levelled the series.
Harris's career highlight, in just his fourth Test, came while he battles a degenerative problem in his right knee that needs corrective surgery. "If I was 21 I'd get it done but I'm not, I'm 31 and it's a 12-month recovery, so for me to have that I think would be the end of my career," he told journalists on Sunday.
"Basically the cartilage on the outside of my right knee is going, basically there's not much left and I'm eating through it every time I pound into the crease. It's just a management thing and I'm going well at the moment."
Harris had arthroscopic surgery earlier this year and suffered such soreness when he returned to first-class cricket in October that he doubted whether he would be able to play four or five-day games again.
He can barely believe he is playing in the Ashes series, let alone preparing for his first Boxing Day Test at the renowned Melbourne Cricket Ground.
"Leading into this series I was hoping to take part in it, but obviously with my knee the way it was, I wasn't sure if I was going to be a part of any cricket this summer," he said.
"After I played my first (Sheffield) Shield game back in Tasmania, I had massive doubts about whether I could even play four-day cricket, it just blew up big-time.
"So at the moment it's a great feeling, obviously to level the series to get it back to 1-1 and to obviously take six wickets in an Ashes Test is a great feeling.
"I'm surprised more than anyone at how it (knee) is reacting. Everything is going great at the moment." The powerful right-armer said he was sure to be nervous before the fourth Test.
"Watching a Boxing Day Test, as an Australian you get shivers down your spine, let alone actually playing in it," he said. "The thought of it actually gets me nervous, it's going to be an amazing feeling if I'm picked.
"It's going to be a great feeling, especially now with the series 1-1," he said. "Obviously I think a few people thought it may have been a dead Test, the last two Tests, but there's a lot more on it now."

Mentor Achrekar wants Tendulkar to win WC

Mentor Achrekar wants Tendulkar to win WC

New Delhi: Proud of Sachin Tendulkar's ever-growing list of achievements, mentor Ramakant Achrekar now just wants him to win the World Cup, which is perhaps the only feat that has eluded him till now.
"I am very happy for Sachin. He has not only made me proud but the entire nation is celebrating his feat. I don't think that anybody can ever come near his record," Achrekar told PTI Bhasha from Mumbai.
The 37-year-old has became the only batsman in the world to score half-century of Test centuries during first Test against South Africa at Centurion on Sunday.
He is the leading run-scorer and century maker in Test and One-Day International cricket. He is the only male player to have scored a double century in the history of ODI cricket.
Other than Brian Lara's Test match highest of 400 not out and first class highest score of 501 not out, every other batting record has Tendulkar's name against it.
Achrekar, under whose guidance Tendulkar had started his cricketing career at Shardashram Vidya Mandir in Mumbai, still follows him progress on television and also watched him score the historical century on Sunday.
"I was watching the match yesterday. I always try to watch his innings. Everybody was congratulating me as well. I am feeling on the top of the world," said the 78-year-old coach.
The veteran's only wish now is to see Tendulkar winning the World Cup to be held in sub-continent from February 19, 2011.
"Sachin has almost all the batting records under his belt now. His dream is to win ODI World Cup and I want him to achieve that. I am sure we will win the trophy next year," Achrekar said.
Tendulkar, who despite his busy schedule never forgets to seek the blessings of his coach, went to meet him before the South Africa tour as well.
"He came to meet me before going to South Africa. Anjali was also with him. He stayed for an hour and talked about cricket. His passion for the game has not reduced in all these years and this quality keeps him ahead of others," said Achrekar.
The coach, having watched Tendulkar from a very close quarter, said that although his batting style has changed a bit but it is only for the better.
"Yes, his style has changed but it is for good. It is quite natural also when you are playing for two decades.
"I was very sure that if could continue his hunger for runs and passion for the game, he would become the best batsman in the world and it happened," said Achrekar, who despite being partially paralysed since 1998, still go to the Shivaji Park daily to rebrush old memories and give some tips to youngsters

Yousuf gets another chance to make WC cut

Yousuf gets another chance to make WC cut

Karachi: Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf has now a chance to prove his fitness and make the cut for his country's World Cup squad after the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) time up to January 5 to announce its 30-man provisional squad.
The PCB had asked the ICC to extend the deadline while it sought information from Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Danish Kaneria who are being investigated for their alleged links with bookies. The ICC accepted the request and extended the deadline from Dec 19 to Jan 5.
Though the fate of the trio hangs in the balance, Yousuf intends to make use of this extra time to prove his fitness and become a member of Pakistan's World Cup squad. Also in contention for a berth in the team is all-rounder Sohail Tanvir, who was also not in the picture for Pakistan's selection because of suspect fitness.
Both Yousuf and Tanvir were almost overlooked for the 30-man squad, which was finalised during a series of meetings before its announcement was deferred due to the players' clearance issue last week.
The selectors are now looking to assess the fitness of Yousuf and Tanvir who were not selected for the New Zealand assignment.
"We will not just sit and wait for the green signal by the PCB but also avail the given time given to mull over other options," a selector told The Express Tribune.
"It is a good opportunity for players like Yousuf and Tanvir to show their fitness before the final selection."
Yousuf, who returned home from the UAE during the series against South Africa following a groin injury, was overlooked for the Twenty20 and the Test series in New Zealand.
Tanvir, who has not played a One-Day International since May last year due to fitness issues, was selected in the Test and Twenty20 squad but was dropped at the eleventh hour after he failed to recover from a knee injury.
However, the selector said both the players will be given a chance and may undergo a fitness test before the squad announcement.
"We want to select the best team and we will look for every option, including Tanvir and Yousuf. The duo would be under the scanner and may go through a fitness test before the squad selection."

First innings deficit proved too much: Dhoni

First innings deficit proved too much: Dhoni

Centurion: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Monday said the first innings deficit was too much to handle and a defeat was inevitable after the visitors conceded a massive 484-run lead to South Africa in the first cricket Test here.
"The deficit was too much to handle, and South Africa got too many runs. It was a good show by the batsmen in the second innings," Dhoni said after India were dismissed for 459 in their second innings to hand South Africa an innings and 25-run victory.
"After they won the toss it was a job half done, but they had to bowl at the right areas and they did that. Their batsmen also batted really well," he added.
Asked what are the positives that India would take from this match, Dhoni said, "Most of the batsmen got off to a good start in the second innings, I mean Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) scored 80, Sachin (Tendulkar) 100, these are positives."
"But there are grey areas. Our bowling has to improve, and we are looking forward to have Zaheer (Khan) back in the side. It is important to educate the bowlers and give them a road map for the next test.
"I've lost quite a few tosses, but it's important now to take some time off and then get back into the groove," he added.
South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who was awarded the Man-of-the-Match for his maiden unbeaten double ton in the first innings, said it was a very special moment for him.
"It took a long way to come but it was worth the wait. It was a very special moment," Kallis said.
"It was a good all-round effort from us, we put in a good performance on day one which put us ahead of the eight ball.
Centurion is a big scoring ground and we came into this Test looking to be very positive with both bat and ball," he said.
Highly satisfied after drawing the first blood in the high profile series, South African skipper Graeme Smith heaped praise on his team and said the aim now would be to make it 2-0 in Durban.
"Obviously very happy, it's a big series, the build-up has been big and it's nice to come out and secure a big win," Smith said.
"The bowlers did very well and bowled in the right areas on the first day. We wanted to be positive in our first innings, and to take the game forward like that. The way the batsmen played, it was great Test cricket.
"We've had terrific support from the fans, looking forward to Christmas with our families. We have to continue in the same vein and make it 2-0 in Durban Test, that would be the aim," he said.
Spinner Paul Harris and pacer Morne Morkel were also awarded with a memento for achieving 100 wickets in their Test career in the post-match presentation.
